Geocaching / GPSGarmin eTrex Legend

I got involved with Geocaching in  August 2001. I was interested in buying a GPSr mostly for use while out deer hunting, and hiking in the woods. I heard about this "new sport" Geocaching while watching TechTV. I decided that it was time to buy my first GPS unit. I figured that it was now worthwhile, since I could not only use my GPS while out hunting, but also year around for Geocaching. I bought a basic Garmin eTrex, the yellow unit. That was a very nice easy to use unit. I found many hidden caches with the yellow unit. I just receintly bought the Garmin eTrex Legend (pictured). The Legend is a real nice unit. It has a preloaded basemap of most major highways and cities. There is also 8 MB of built in memory for loading maps of your choice using  MapSource Software. I was really surprised at the amount of maps, and the detail that could be loaded into 8 MB! I have loaded almost the whole state of Wisconsin in just under 8 MB. The maps I loaded are from MapSource Roads and Recreation. These maps have real good detail right down to the street level. Needless to say this is a really cool little unit.

I also own a Radio Shack Digitraveler PDA GPS. I use this unit to power my mobile APRS station. The Digitraveler has been modified to power off the data cable coming from my TinyTrak3 mobile "TNC". The Digitraveler is a 16 channel disc style GPS unit. The unit was intended for use with a PDA or laptop as a display. As stated above, the unit has been modified for use in my truck for APRS use. To be use for APRS no display is needed.. For more information about APRS or TinyTrak3 check out my APRS, and TinyTrak web pages

My Geocaching Profile

I just learned about this cool software. It's called xImage from Garmin. With this software and the Legend you are limited to only being able to make screen captures from your GPS. Although it is limited for the Legend, you can do more things with newer GPS units from Garmin. Below are two actual screen capture images.
